Christmas Day, Dec. 2015

The boys were up bright and early, waiting for 6:30 am, the time we told them they had to wait until before coming to get us and going downstairs.  All the presents I had stressed over choosing were a big hit and the morning was so fun.  This was our first Christmas in our new house and I loved opening presents downstairs by the fireplace.  Eva didn't wake up until almost 8!  So we opened presents without her and let her open her's later.  Crepes for breakfast before heading to GG's house for ham and hash browns and toast and more presents.

Later that day we had Jeanette and Nic over for Christmas dinner and I cooked my first rib roast.  Oh. My.  Gosh. It was the most delicious roast I have ever had.  And the rest of the meal was so perfect!  It was a great Christmas day!

Sunday Before Christmas, Dec. 2015

There is something special about the Sunday before Christmas.  The Christmas program in Sacrament Meeting full of beautiful music and short talks.  The lessons about Jesus and his birth.  All tinged with excitement for the actual day.  Everyone dresses up a little (I found a beautiful dress at Kid to Kid a month before Christmas and saved it for Eva to wear) and feels a little closer to Heavenly Father and to each other.

Talking to Santa, Dec. 2015

Every year the kids get to talk to Santa at the Nielsen family Christmas party.  They always react the same when in the first few years - horror.  And then after that they can't wait until it's their turn to tell Santa exactly what they want for Christmas.

Getting Ready for Christmas, Dec. 2015

. . . And let the Christmas season begin.  As it happens every year, I take a deep breath and tell myself it doesn't matter where the kids hang the ornaments, it will look great.  And every year, I start to get a little, um, overbearing about suggesting where they hang the ornaments.  Davis even started getting upset with Noah for putting ornaments too close together (on the same branch).  But we got it decorated and Eva only broke a handful of the ball ornaments before we took it down a month later.  Thanks to Darren for taking pictures - I think he was really just trying to stay as far away from the suggestions as he could.

All Things Christmas, Dec 2013

The summary in words first; I was able to let go of my need for perfection and let the boys put the ornaments on the tree wherever they thought best.  Darren had to work late, so I was in charge of getting the ornaments out of little boxes and little bags and putting the hooks on them.  Davis and Noah put them on the tree.  And for the most part, I left them all where they were put.

The annual Nielsen Christmas party where all the parents hold their breath and hope their children will sit nicely on Santa's lap.  Some do.  Some don't.  This was the first time Davis did, but it was only to make sure Santa knew he wanted Superman for Christmas.  (Not on any list he have us, so good info to tell Santa.) As soon as Noah saw Santa walk in, he started yelling, "I want Batman!"  But when it came time for him to sit on Santa's lap and deliver his request, it was just too much.

After lots of work trying to plan some special things for Christmas Eve with out little family, Davis decided to get sick.  A bad cold, maybe a touch of the flu.  So me and him were stuck at home Christmas night, while Darren and Noah joined the other Buttars at Nana and Bumpa's house.  Davis fell asleep on the couch at 6:30 pm, and despite being disappointed that all my planning was for naught, I enjoyed a little peace and quiet by myself on Christmas Eve.

The boys were pretty excited Christmas morning, though not the "can't sleep, up at 5 am, and just can't wait any longer" excited that will come later.  This year the super hero population in our house was quadrupled - lots of new super hero action figures to do battle in the coming year.  And new plastic animals to fight.  Lots of new games to play, and a classic - a big bin of Legos.  We all went to Peg's for brunch and then back home to enjoy the day.

A few days later, we went bowling (yes, again) with Grandma and Grandpa and Kim.  And just in case you were wondering - yes, it is very difficult to bowl well with a big pregnant belly in the way.  Do you know who is a surprisingly fantastic bowler?  Grandpa!

And it came to pass . . . A Christmas Eve Tradition

My favorite part of Christmas Eve has always been acting out the nativity.  I remember scavenging the house when we were young, looking for robes, sheets, ties, and other necessary props for the event.  Doing it in our own home last year, with only four in our little family, it was short and sweet because we didn't have as many actors.  But this year, we had almost the whole family with us, and everyone participated.  There was a great hubbub as we gathered our costumes and props and assigned parts.  And here is the result in pictures, with scriptures quotes from Luke 2 and Matthew 2.

Grandpa as our Narrator

"And it came to pass in those days, that there went out a decree from Caesar Augustus, that all the world should be taxed. . . And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of Nazareth . . . To be taxed with Mary his espoused wife, being great with child."

Grandma took over Grandpa's usual roll as the donkey.  Davis is Joseph and he got to chose Mary - me.
And Darren was the innkeeper.

"And she brought forth her firstborn son, and wrapped him in swaddling clothes, and laid him in a manger; because there was no room for them in the inn."

 No room at the inn!

Joseph was very protective of Baby Jesus!

"And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night.  And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them; and they were sore afraid."

Kim as the angel and Matt, Amanda, and Noah as shepherds.  Noah was not so afraid of the angel.

"And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people.  For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.  And this shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger.  And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men."

Notice the "sheep" being watched over (in Matt and Amanda's hands).

"And it came to pass, as the angels were gone away from them into heaven, the shepherds said one to another, Let us now go even unto Bethlehem, and see this thing which is come to pass, which the Lord hath made known unto us.  And they came with haste, and found Mary, and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger."

"Now when Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. When Herod the king had heard these things, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. . . Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. And he sent them to Bethlehem, and said, Go and search diligently for the young child . . ."

Yes, Herod looks vaguely like the innkeeper, played by Darren.  Nic and Jeanette were the wise men.

"When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy.  And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshiped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."

It is a very special family tradition, now carried on with the three generations!  But it wasn't without bloopers!

Joseph protecting Baby Jesus from the lion/sheep Noah was carrying.

Joseph and the youngest shepherd fighting over the Baby Jesus.

Pointing out the star?!

And Grandma's personal favorite - this picture was taken .5 seconds before Noah saw his chance, since the baby was out, and dived into the manger.  Since there was a metal roasting pan under the yellow blanket, it wasn't the soft landing he was expecting.  He cried a bit, not because he was hurt, just surprised, and Grandma laughed and laughed and laughed.

I truly love this experience because it helps us remember we are celebrating Christmas because of Christ. We celebrate His birth and His love for each of us.  We celebrate because of His example and His sacrifice.  And we celebrate this way with our family.  What a wonderful Christmas gift!
